Homework Help for Parents and Carers: Establishing Good Habits

Dear Parents and Carers,

We all know that guiding our kids through homework can feel daunting at times, but it doesn’t have to be. With a few simple tweaks to your routine and creating a dedicated study space, you can help your child build focus and tackle their homework with confidence—and make it a smoother part of daily life.

Why Homework Routines Are a Game-Changer

Many children, especially in primary and lower secondary school, thrive when they have a steady routine. Establishing a set time and place for homework each day helps them see it as part of their daily rhythm. It reduces the pressure of last-minute rushing or stressful cramming, and creates a calmer, more productive environment at home—something we all aim for, right? (Though, like you, I don’t always get it perfect!)

Designing a Homework Space That Works for You

Having an organised and quiet study area can do wonders for your child’s focus. Choose a spot away from distractions like TV or noisy spaces, and make sure everything your child needs is easily accessible. This helps them stay on task without interruptions.

In our home, we’ve found a routine that works for us: an afternoon snack followed by outside play (to burn off that school-day energy), then it’s time for homework. We usually use the dining table—whether it’s quiet reading or going over vocab for a test. It’s calm and focused, and I’m nearby working, ready to help if needed. Every family is different, so find a setup that works best for you and your children.

Mastering Time Management Together

Concentration can be tricky for younger children, which is why breaking tasks into smaller chunks really helps. Try using a timer to divide homework into focused intervals (20-30 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute break). This keeps their minds sharp and avoids burnout.

In our family, we do a little homework each day, building on skills over time to avoid those dreaded last-minute panics. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t—and that’s OK! Remember, we’re a normal family too. Despite our best intentions, our kids often forget or try to dodge their homework, preferring to kick a ball outside. And honestly, who can blame them?

Be There to Help, But Let Them Lead

As parents, it’s tempting to step in when our kids struggle, but encouraging them to work things out on their own builds problem-solving skills and confidence. Instead of providing answers, try asking guiding questions that nudge them in the right direction. Praise their efforts, and you’ll see their motivation soar!

And a little secret—teachers can tell when parents have completed a child’s homework. It’s important to remember, we know what your children are capable of. By letting them take the lead, you’re helping them grow academically and become more independent learners. (And yes, I know, it’s tough not to take over sometimes!)

Making Homework Stress-Free

With a few consistent habits in place, homework doesn’t need to be a daily battle. Setting clear expectations, minimising distractions, and offering positive reinforcement goes a long way. Before you know it, your child will start handling homework with more ease and less resistance.

Tip of the Day: Start small—introduce a daily homework routine where your child completes just one task, or try breaking sessions into timed intervals with short breaks to keep them focused and refreshed.

By nurturing these good homework habits early, you’re setting your child up for success—not only in school but in life. Stay consistent, be patient, and remember, you’re doing a great job!

Wishing you all a fantastic week ahead!

Warmly, Ms. Liz

Ms. Liz
