Is your child starting primary school this September? Here’s how to prepare for a confident, happy start to their learning journey.

The first day of primary school is a huge milestone for both children and parents. It marks the beginning of a new chapter—one filled with discovery, independence, and countless new experiences. Whether your little one is raring to go or feeling a little nervous, there are simple things you can do to help them settle in smoothly and thrive in their new environment.

🌟 Building Confidence from Day One

Starting primary school can bring a whirlwind of emotions. From putting on a uniform for the first time to making new friends and learning classroom routines, there’s a lot to take in. One of the best ways to support your child is by building confidence at home.

Top Tip: Create a ‘Celebration Wall’ at home. Dedicate a space in your home where your child can display their achievements—stickers, certificates, drawings, and kind notes from teachers or classmates. It’s a visual reminder of how far they’ve come and reinforces a positive attitude toward learning.

🎒 What Can You Do to Prepare?

Here are some tried-and-tested tips to get your child ready for primary school:

  • Practice morning routines over the summer. Set wake-up and get-ready times to mirror the school day.

  • Read books about starting school to help your child understand what to expect.

  • Encourage independence by letting them practise opening lunch boxes, putting on shoes, and packing their bag.

  • Talk positively about school—share your own happy memories and talk about the fun activities they’ll do.

💬 Supporting Emotional Wellbeing

Some children adapt quickly; others may need a little more support. That’s completely normal.

  • Listen and validate their feelings. Let your child know it’s okay to feel nervous or shy.

  • Establish a predictable goodbye routine to help with separation anxiety. A hug, a phrase, or a little wave can work wonders.

✏️ Encourage a Love of Learning

Primary school lays the foundation for your child’s learning journey. You can help at home by:

  • Reading together daily – it builds vocabulary, imagination, and closeness.

  • Asking open-ended questions about their day, like “What made you smile today?”

  • Making learning playful – through puzzles, games, and everyday moments like cooking or nature walks.

Starting Primary School
